There is absolutely no point in giving out homework during the weekends. There are three legitimate reasons to why this is true. First, every student needs to take a break after a week of hard work and studies. Second, students need time to learn something productive that isn’t related to what they are doing in school. And finally, all students should be getting a good amount of sleep.
Everyone cannot be like the rabbit in the Energizer commercial that keeps on going and going. They need to take a break once in a while. In his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey mentions that all teens need time to rejuvenate and recharge themselves. He said that teens should focus and often strengthen and strive to balance on four aspects of their lives: their mind, body, soul, and heart. Why? Because those aspects are essential. It’s laborious to do well in school (mind) when you’re exhausted (body). It’s easy to make friends (heart) when you’re in tune with yourself (soul) and full of energy (body). You get the picture. Therefore, homework during the weekends will only tire students and keep them from satisfying all those four aspects.
By recharging yourself, I don’t mean oversleeping, watching wasted hours of Youtube videos, etc. I’m a strong believer in productivity. I believe that with those extra hours, you should be doing something that will help you get into college or with life. To put it in other words, I believe everyone should have a weekend full of activity, whether it’s taking dance lessons, computer programming classes, etc. In fact, according to the Montana State University Extension Service, those who are involved in at least one extracurricular activity will become more successful in their lifetime. They will be more willing to complete tasks, solve problems, and voice opinions. Extracurricular activities also give them a chance to meet new people and make more friends. And who doesn’t love that? Everyone should get involved in extracurricular activities during the weekend without worrying whether or not they will be able to finish their homework.
Lastly, one thing that benefits everyone is enough sleep. I cannot emphasize that statement enough. You may not think so, but sleep is very important. Your body needs a good amount of rest to function properly. You are more prone to diseases, have difficulty concentrating and remembering things, and have a more saturnine personality if you don’t get enough sleep, believe it or not. The amount of sleep that you need depends on who you are, but an average person needs 7 to 8 hours of sleep a day. If one had many homework assignments to complete, s/he wouldn’t be able to get the amount of sleep s/he needs.
Homework does serve useful purposes. But if you want to renew yourself, get involved in extracurricular activities, and get enough sleep, an excessive amount of homework, especially during the weekends, isn’t such a great thing. In conclusion, homework during the weekends isn’t necessary or needed.
